Listen to the following three examples. Then, based on the overall performance of the piece, comment back with which performance was the strongest (and why), and which performance you felt needed refinement (and why).

My least favorite was Example #1. The 'dai dat' at the end really clashed and it sounded as though they were speeding up. The one I liked the best though was a tie between #2 or #3. Both choirs had great tonality and the soloists were very well sung. Also, the soloist in the third video played Jean Val Jean in the Hiliners performance of 'Les Miserables', I only met him once or twice through some friends but he sure looked familiar! :)-Tilo
ReplyDeleteWell, i think every choir did a good job! but my favorite one was the 1st example. Their sound and words were more precise, nice dynamics and there costumes were cool, I guess, I hope we don't wear costumes like that ha, but maybe they wore costumes because when "you look the part you feel the part"
ReplyDeletethe 2nd example was too slow and I didn't like it as much. There wasn't that much shape to it... it sounded all in one volume.

I think that Example #3 was the strongest because of the great blend. I also liked the dynamics throughout the recording and the burst of energy during the last few pages of music.
ReplyDeleteExample #2 was probably my least favorite just because the whole thing seemed kind of bland. Everything was one dynamic and towards the end, I felt that the choir got too excited and started rushing.

To me example 1 was the best because the women were loud, and the words seemed "distinguished" and they were very lively in the Dai Dai part it was good to see
ReplyDeleteExample 3 came next , their girls were also quite strong and they accented well but I still favored group 1
Example 2 comes last because I could not hear them as well as the others but it seemed like they were singing a little slower than the rest and I did not like it

I felt that the 3rd performance was definitely the strongest because the soloist was amazing and the group had great blend and tone quality. They even had Scottish accents and everything. The second example probably needs the most refinement because although the soloist was very good, the rest of the group didn't really blend and they seemed out of tune.

Based on the overall performance on the pieces, I thought either example #3, or #1 was the strongest. I thought #3 was strong because they had a good scottish accent, had good diction and tone quality. I thought #1 was strong because they blended really well, had good pitch accuracy, but I felt like they were off rhythm at 2:23. I though example #2 needed refinement because the choir was lacking parts as a whole. I thought their Dai Dai's weren't very strong in the beginning, but they had good dynamics.
ReplyDeleteExample #1: very strong voices and very high energy and i liked the difference in dynamics they sang.
ReplyDeleteExample #2: they had low energy in their voices they were loud because of the number of students in the choir but their singing wasnt energetic and interesting.
example #3: to me this one was the best performance because they had crisp clear singing and each part could be heard well.

Ex #3 was overall the best. The group had good consonants as well as the soloist, and there was a great balance between all four parts.
ReplyDeleteEx #2 was not bad, but needed refinement. The men were especially not together, and there was a bit of a problem with key.
Ex #1 was the worst of all 3 examples, and needed refinement in balance, key, and needed more energy (There was moving but it was random and not together)

Example #3 was the best of the three. I love their diction and pronunciation--very Celtic. I thought their accents and staccatos on the words "take" and "steep" really played into the style of the song. The balance was great, and the ensemble produced a rich dark tone. They also used dynamic contrast! And their phrasing was amazing.
ReplyDeleteExample #2 needed some refinement. At the men's entrance after the first solo, it sounded like the tone was going flat; there were also pitch accuracy and intonation issues. Some of the rhythms in both the soloist and ensemble weren't correct, causing verticality issues. The "dai dai" section rushed significantly, and there was a balance issue in the final chord.
The first group had trouble with notes at times and other technical work, but they had great musicality and seemed to enjoy themselves.
ReplyDeleteThe third group had the opposite problem in terms of problems, they were technical good and sung their individual parts well, but at times did not either listen to the other parts, or just forgot and they did miss or were timid at some entrances.
The second group was the best with a great combination of creativeness and spot on technical work. Each group was strong and understood their parts, while complimenting the other parts.
-All good choirs though. Kirk Vande Brake
In the first performance, I felt that they were blended but their tone quality did not sound mature or disciplined. I think that the second group needed the most refinement in regards to blend and tempo and such. The third group I thought was the strongest based on their tempo, blend and group response to their conductor... even though the videography made me want to hurl.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I felt example 1 was the one that needed the most refinement. I felt as if some of the performers weren't prepared. Some of the voice parts stood out over others and the tempo sped up. Also the way the represented themselves was distracting to me. Some of the performers were moving (as in fiddling around not moving with the music) and it drew away from the performance for me.
ReplyDeleteIt was hard for me to decided between the second and third for the strongest, but I think the third was the strongest. What decided it for me was their diction. It gave much character to the song and it was enjoyable. They were very much in sync and blended really well
